HOW-TO: Making Literary Fortune Sticks (with Game of Thrones quotes)

When I was younger, I had a novelty tin of fortune sticks. The idea was that I could pull a fortune out of the jar when I needed one. They were a fun idea, and it gave me the inspiration I needed to customize a set for myself. Soon, I had a set of book quote themed sticks, supportive quotes, Spanish/English vocabulary, jokes, Reasons Why I Love You, and started making them as gifts for friends, too! They are super easy to make, and are a cute handmade gift for friends and family over the holidays, or for yourself!

What You’ll Need:

Mason Jar, or container of choice

Crafting Sticks, or popsicle sticks

A really great pen,

And a supply of quotes, sayings, jokes, lyrics, reminders, vocabulary words, etc. — this project is great for anything!

Optional:

Ribbon,

Cardstock, or hard paper for labeling,

and a Hole Punch.

This project is great for readers and writers – but I wouldn’t suggest tackling this if you really hate handwriting things. It is important to be careful and write small, so don’t stress over this project if its not for you.

A Game of Thrones quotes to add to my book quote themed jar.

1. Decide on a theme for your jar. Fortunes, quotes, sayings, inside jokes, lyrics, reminders, and vocabulary words work great for this project, but you can literally do this for anything that can be written.

I have a few that I keep for myself that have helped me learn. For example, for Spanish class, I have English on one side and Spanish on another, to help me remember vocabulary. I am a tactile learner, so the act of physically writing the sticks helps me to remember vocab. as much (if not more) than the act of pulling sticks to study with!

2. I have found that sharpies and markers tend to bleed, so I prefer to use thin ball point pens. I really like the Pilot G-2 05 and 07, but any pen will work! If you want to add a pop of color to your project, try writing in a few different fun colors!

3. Once you have enough sticks written, go ahead and drop them in the jar!

4. I like to add confetti or glitter to the bottom of the jars, for a little pop of color and sparkle. If you are interested in creating a wrap for your jar to hide the sticks a bit, find a tutorial here.

5. Cut a square of card stock, punch a hole, and thread the ribbon through. Tie around the lip of the jar. This is a great way to keep track of themes or recipients!

If giving these as a gift, I like to include a bundle of blank sticks so that the recipient can optionally add a few of their own quotes in.

This project is great for keeping for yourself or for giving as a gift.

  1. I still have the jar you made me! I get so happy every time I look at it and pull out a stick. I love this Game of Thrones spin! You’re so creative. With some of the best handwriting I’ve ever seen to this day!
